Food Storage

Getting Started - Fruits

Step Three: Determine what fruits to store.

So now that you know how much of the fruit group to store, you need to decide how much of each fruit to store.

Here are some tips to help you:

  • Evaluate the fruits your family enjoys eating. Store those that you will eat.

  •
  • Consider planting a fruit tree in your yard. Fresh fruit is always refreshing on a hot summer day, especially when it's free!

  •
  • Frozen concentrates take up considerable less space in storage than regular juice bottles. If you have a large freezer it would be ideal to store some frozen juice concentrate.

  •
  • Although fruits provide many valuable vitamins, minerals and fiber, they are not absolutely essential for survival. Our bodies are more dependent upon grains and foods from the meat and beans group to provide us energy for survival. If you are not able to store the ideal amount of fruits for your family, it is a good idea to have a supply of multivitamin supplements to prevent nutrient deficiencies. However you should not rely on supplements on a normal everyday basis. The best way to achieve optimal nutrition is to eat a wide variety of foods.
